Upland Name

The settlement, opened in 1887 by the Bedford brothers, had been called Magnolia Villa. The citizens in 1902 pestered the county board of supervisors to rename it, which is precisely what they did, seeing that the elevation is slightly higher than that of Ontario.

Madonna of the Trail.

This monument along the National Old Trails Highway honors pioneer mothers, who immigrated to California by covered wagon. In early Spanish days Padres traveled this road between the missions. Later, this road was the main link between San Bernardino and Los Angeles, under Mexican rule. In November 1826, Jedediah Smith and a band of 16 trappers, the first Americans to enter California overland, followed this trail seeking a river flowing westward. Thousands of travelers passed over this roadway when it became part of the old U.S. Route 66 in the 1930s.
