Originally settled in 1852 and long known as Cream City, the town was founded about 1870 and so named because of the luxuriant growth of ferns in the valley.
It is also a charming Victorian village with meticulously kept homes and gardens, and the town is so historically and architecturally authentic that it has been designated a state historic landmark.
