History

Bountiful was the second Mormon established city in Utah, it was founded by Peregrine Sessions and initially called Sessions Settlement.

In 1855 the name was changed to Bountiful. The Book of Mormon describes a city near the sea called Bountiful, where milk, honey and fruits are abundant.

The settlement was abandoned in 1858 when President Buchanan’s troops arrived, the settlers left guards behind to burn down homes and destroy the crops, but the incident was settled peacefully and the settlers returned to their homes in the fall.

Since 1980 Bountiful has become a suburb of Salt Lake City, the housing developments have boomed in the area and in 1980 a new Mormon temple was built against the mountainside.

Industry in Bountiful

Bountiful began as a little farming community and is now a residential area for professional commuters.

Landmarks

Using local materials and labor and a plan by Augusts Farnham a 86-foot by 44-foot five-spire tabernacle was built in 1857, it cost $60,000. The materials were hauled across the plains by oxen. This is the oldest chapel in continuous use in Utah.
