This community began as a railroad siding called Orlando, but residents soon changed the name to Tangier to honor Tangiers, the legendary seaport in Morocco, even though the Oklahoma town had little chance of becoming a new "Gateway to Africa."
General Tangier Trivia
While driving just outside Tangier on the first of April, 1966, an unnamed 34-year-old man watched a glowing green object as wide as the road spurt past him with tremendous speed. The UFO shrieked horribly and emitted a stunning wave of heat. The manís automobile ceased functioning and he later added his story to a long list of Okie close encounters.
Oklahoma gets its share of sightings, but Alaska and New Mexico are the states most susceptible to extraterrestrial misadventures.
