The name of this village appears to have French and English roots related to a "cheerful" person who might or might not have been "lascivious."
Gays is somewhat famous for a double-decker outhouse. Built in 1869 for patrons of a general store and occupants of the store's attached apartments, the outdoor restroom provided a four-person capacity with two human waste stations on each floor. Current owners claim that it's the oldest two-story outhouse in the U.S.
One day an abandoned bicycle turned up in Gays with a sign that said it was Adolf Hitler's bike. Locals believed the bike was the product of a prankster, but they could not reach the Fuehrer for comment. The bike eventually became a popular tourist attraction. In 2005, the bike vanished and has not been seen since. Most people suspect Gays was victimized by another prankster, but some amateur sleuths perceive the dirty work of dim-witted Neo-Nazis craving a memento of their idol.
