Place Name

In 1882 the station and post office on the Cincinnati Southern Railroad were named for the Baron Frederic Emile D’Erlanger, at the suggestion of Mrs. Hannah Bedinger.

Historical

The community’s first name was Timberlake, after Major Thornton Timberlake, a pioneer settler, and landowner. A station was established in 1876-77 where the railroad tracks crossed the highway, and named Greenwood for Miles Greenwood, first president of the Cincinnati Southern Railroad.

It was renamed Silver Lake for the silvery color of the water in the reservoir nearby, when people confused it with similar names on the line. Greenwood Station’s post office was opened on October 29, 1877, which was changed to Greenwood Lake on April 8, 1878.

In 1881 the railroad experienced financial difficulties, from which it was rescued by the syndicate headed by Baron Erlanger, hence the name change, in appreciation.
