Place Name
Founding resident Dr. P.H. Talbot named this town after waterway straightaways featured in Peter Wilkins and the Flying Indians, an adventure novel by Robert Paltock. The fictional aborigines, who flew primitive aircraft in the book, used long, direct tracks of rivers for takeoffs and landings. The wet airstrips were called "arkoes."
